Prof. KIM Beomjoon(Director)

The Institute of Industrial Science (IIS) of the University of Tokyo and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) of France have operated the Laboratory for Integrated Micro-Mechatronics Systems (LIMMS), an international joint research organization on MEMS technology, since 1995. was upgraded to the official international research organization UMI (Unité Mixte Internationale) of CNRS in 2004, and the Institute of Industrial Science of the University of Tokyo was accredited as an international collaborative research center.

LIMMS is mainly engaged in the development of new fields of nanotechnology, research on bio-applied microsystems, and advanced integrated microsystems. 2011, LIMMS was selected for the EU project INCOLAB (FP7), the first EU-Japan joint research lab EUJO- by the European Commission. LIMMS, and conducted international joint research. In Lille, France, we established SMMIL-E, a mirror organization of LIMMS, at the Oscar Lambre Center, a hospital specializing in oncology, in 2014, and have started a project on cancer research. From April 2019, we have been selected by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) as a Core-2-Core A project for the formation of an advanced center to promote the Japan-Europe Advanced Clinical Medical Engineering Collaboration (JETMeE), mainly in France and Switzerland, in order to strengthen our new center and to further international collaborative research. We are now deepening our international joint research.

In April 2021, we established the “International Research Institute for Multi-disciplinary Microsystems” (abbreviated name: LIMMS (Laboratories for International Research on Multi-disciplinary Micro Systems) International Collaborative Research Institute) as a 10-year plan. LIMMS (Laboratories for International Research on Multi-disciplinary Micro Systems) was established. LIMMS, which has been operated for 25 years by the Institute of Industrial Science in collaboration with CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), is the parent of this organization, and the medical school, engineering school, Frontier Research Center, Information Science and Technology, Institute of Solid State Physics, Institute for Advanced Study, and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Tohoku University will participate in this organization. LIMMS has hosted more than 250 foreign researchers from France and other European countries.

LIMMS has hosted more than 250 foreign researchers from France and other European countries, and is now working to maximize the physical, mental, and cultural benefits of quality of life for the aging and shrinking population that Japan is experiencing ahead of other developed countries, by utilizing the results of international joint research in nanobio, μTAS, silicon neurons, IoT, energy harvesters, and other interdisciplinary fields of micro-nano. We will engage in cross-disciplinary research to maximize the physical, mental, and cultural benefits of quality of life. The University of Tokyo, which has a broad perspective in a wide range of fields, will take the lead in international collaborative research and the next generation research, utilizing the existing international research network of LIMMS and 14 research institutes in 10 countries, in order to develop these solutions as global standard technologies rather than simply localized ones applicable only in Japan. The University of Tokyo, with its broad perspective in a wide range of fields, will take the lead in conducting international joint research and fostering the next generation of young researchers by utilizing the existing international research network of LIMMS and 14 related institutes in 10 countries.

Through the activities of this organization, we will promote fusion research and achieve the above objectives. We look forward to your support and cooperation.
